What does a Lighting man do?

The lighting man is responsible to provide the necessary lighting for a movie. They should know how to use different types of lighting in a movie. Before they step foot on the sets, they need to be able see how the lighting setup will look. Before they set foot on the set, they should be familiar with all aspects of lighting.

Gaffer

Gaffer is the lighting man in film. He oversees and controls the lighting during filming. His work is constantly monitored and adjusted. He also manages lighting equipment, instruments, and sources. He must also work with a team of other crew members to create the best light setup possible. This role requires extensive communication between the gaffer and other crew members, both during the shoot and between takes.

The Gaffer works usually with the Electricians, also known to be called Best Boys. The Best Boys are considered the top electricians on a lighting crew. They are responsible to ensure that lighting technicians have all the required equipment and have the correct paperwork. Best Boys can also communicate with the production department and the lighting company and arrange the delivery of the lighting equipment. They can work as many as 12 hours per day.

Grip crew

The key grip works closely with cinematographers and is a crucial member of the crew. This person will assist the director in achieving the vision and ensure that the technical aspects of filming are handled properly. In addition, key grips will coordinate between departments and convey messages. The key grip's important role in film production is why it is so crucial to have strong leadership skills and great communication skills.

As a grip crew member, you will be responsible setting up and moving the camera and other lighting equipment. Your crew members and others on the set will also need to be safe. To ensure proper lighting control, the key grip will be closely involved with the gaffer and director.

Lighting storeman

A Lighting Storeman's job is to purchase light bulbs, and other lighting consumables. He is responsible for positioning the lights on-set. He also coordinates with the DoP to ensure everything runs smoothly. This role has traditionally been dominated by men, but in recent years, more women have entered the field. Many of them acquire their skills through training at college or on the job. Some may go on as freelancers.
