Red House Painters has grown to be a cult group and one of 4AD's most beloved artists in the years that have passed since their debut. They've released a number of records that have helped to define the label during their time on the label. This April 21st, 4AD is set to release a box set of their first four albums, Down Colorful Hill, Red House Painters (Rollercoaster), Ocean Beach and Bridge.
Drop: a reverb-drenched six-song debut
Red House Painters had only been formed one year before their debut album, 'Drop'. This six-song LP was full of reverb and reminded me of an early C100 Memorex cassette. Although the songs were choppy, they had a great feel and Mark Kozelek's voice was clear and uncluttered.

Their reverb-soaked guitars often reminded of Neil Young. They also covered classic rock songs. However, Kozelek had some original material, which was not always as easily accessible. He reworked John Denver's 'Take Me Home' into an acoustic version, and also covered 'I Am A Rock' by Simon and Garfunkel on the 1993 album Rollercoaster.
'Moments’: A more pastoral approach
The next album, 'Ocean Beach', featured a folk-influenced approach to music. There are no long, droning songs like their early albums. And there are many more melodies. Lyrical narratives are also included. It was the final album without Gorden Mack and saw Kozelek move to a more radio-friendly style. The album's cover versions of 'Long Distance Runaround,' by Yes, and Drop' from Fleetwood Mac were more upbeat than their previous work.
'Long Distance Runaround' is an acoustic cover from a 1971 hit.
While they have covered many classic songs over the years by The Red House Painters, their first acoustic cover was 'Long Distance Runaround. This is not their best cover but it's a solid one that Kozelek uses to break out of his shell, delivering better songs and melodies.

'Ocean Beach’: An introspective approach
Kozelek and Red House Painters adopted a folk-influenced approach with Ocean Beach. Their early albums don't have the long, dreamlike epics they had, but there are many songs that are more reflective than ever.
